A Tale of Two Trees
Let's start with a quick thought experiment.
Picture two fruit trees in your backyard. Every morning, you walk outside with your cup of coffee and see that one tree is lush and full of vibrant green leaves. This tree is always teeming with blushing apple blossoms and bright red, perfectly crisp apples; the best you've ever tasted. You’re always so excited to go up to this beautiful tree, knowing it will have the perfect apple for you to pick.
The second tree is a bit different. One day it may have leaves; the next, it may not. One day it yields oranges, the next yellow and green bananas, and every so often, cucumbers. Some days, it doesn’t produce fruit at all, has no leaves, and is pink for some reason. You never know what you'll get with the second tree.
Now, suppose one fine day you get an itch to bake an apple pie. Which tree do you turn to, and why?
The answer is clear, right? The apple tree.
That choice illustrates how your brand and visual identity work in the eyes of your customers and clients. The apple tree has earned your trust through visual consistency. You recognize it; you’re familiar with the type and flavor of apple it produces; you know what to expect, and it delivers the same quality every time. The second tree may be interesting, but it can't be relied on. It always looks different and never has the same taste.
Your brand works the same way for your business. When your visual identity is consistent across every interaction, customers begin to recognize you without even thinking about it. They start to associate your logo, colors, typography, and overall look with the quality of your product, your service, and the experience you provide. Over time, that consistency creates a familiar place for your business in their minds. They remember you. They know what to expect from you. And when it’s time to choose, that familiarity builds the trust that makes them more likely to choose you.
